Tommy/Dante Sides
INT. DANTE¡¦S OFFICE - DAY
Two old friends, businessman DANTE LECLAIR and gangster TOMMY HAYES, puff cigars over a business discussion.
TOMMY |
It's the future, Dante. |
|
DANTE |
Maybe I'm just an old fashioned kind of guy then. |
|
TOMMY |
You're an entrepreneur, like me. |
|
DANTE |
This is science, Tommy. What do we know about science? |
|
TOMMY |
Ain't gotta know nothin'. That's what scientists are for. |
|
DANTE |
You have scientists? |
|
TOMMY |
Scientists, doctors, everything. They all say the same thing: this is the future. A guy who wants to make some real money, he'd put his money in this. If he¡¦s smart. Are you smart, Dante? |
|
DANTE |
I like to think so. |
|
TOMMY |
Then you're in. |
|
DANTE |
No, I'm out. This isn't for me. |
|
TOMMY |
I'm very disappointed. |
|
DANTE |
You know me. I'd love to help if I could, but this is out of my league. |
|
TOMMY |
Imagine this for a second. You're a young parent. You have a beautiful baby. Ten fingers. Ten toes. Then you get some bad news. The baby is sick. Your only child. Very sick, Dante. You lose the baby. What would you give to replace your baby, Dante? Is there anything you wouldn't give to get that baby back? |
|
DANTE |
So we exploit their misery. |
|
TOMMY |
We provide a service. |
|
DANTE |
Depends how you look like at it. |
|
TOMMY |
I'm askin' you as a friend, Dante, invest in this research. |
|
DANTE |
And I'm telling you as a friend, Tommy, I can't. |
|
TOMMY |
I only ask for one favor. |
|
DANTE |
Anything but this. |
|
TOMMY |
This is all I'm askin'. |
|
DANTE |
I can't do it. |
Tommy stands and heads for the door.
TOMMY |
Some day, and I hope for your sake that that day never comes, you may ask me for a favor. I pray that I will be more generous than you have been today. |
Tommy exits.
Dante stares. |
