Sides

Jonathan and Susan

EXT. CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL - EVENING

Susan exits and turns to walk down the street.

A hand reaches out and grabs her shoulder.

She is startled and turns abruptly.

It is Jonathan.

JONATHAN
Little jumpy?

She lets out a sigh of relief.

JONATHAN
Sorry if I scared you, I just wanted to see how you were doing with the IS Cam.

SUSAN
Very well, thank you. Do you have a device that gives you eyes in the back of your head?

JONATHAN
Yeah, but it's still in the development stages.

SUSAN
(smiles) Next time you sneak up on me make sure I know your coming.

JONATHAN
You don't like surprises, do you?

SUSAN
Only when I know about them.

JONATHAN
Well, here comes another one. How about joining me for dinner tonight? Nothing fancy.

SUSAN
Now that is a surprise.

JONATHAN
A good one or a bad one.

SUSAN
One that I didn't see coming.

JONATHAN
Oh.

SUSAN
But a good one.

SFX - They are being watched through BINOCULARS.

JONATHAN
Are you a vegetarian?

SUSAN
Sometimes.

JONATHAN
How can you sometimes be a vegetarian?

SUSAN
Depends on my mood.

JONATHAN
You like health food I bet?

SUSAN
What would make you say that?

JONATHAN
You look pretty healthy to me. So, am I right, are you a health nut?

SUSAN
I eat healthy, yeah. Nut, no.

JONATHAN
Knew it.

SUSAN
What else does your male intuition tell you?

JONATHAN
Well, let me take a good look at you.

SUSAN
(looks away sheepishly) You're embarrassing me.

JONATHAN
Okay, I got it. You look like an artsy type.
I bet you like to go to museums and see art house type movies.

Susan stares at him.

JONATHAN
Tell me, am I right?

SUSAN
Maybe partially.

JONATHAN
That means yes. Maybe always means yes.

She holds back a smile.

SUSAN
What about you? What do you like to do?

JONATHAN
Beg your pardon?

SUSAN
I would expect a different type of an apartment from someone who's a spy.

JONATHAN
Whoa. That's a dirty word around here.
Like to call myself a watcher.

SUSAN
How is that different than a spy?

JONATHAN
I don't know, I guess you'd have to ask a spy that question.

SUSAN
How is that different than a spy?

JONATHAN
I don't know, I guess you'd have to ask a spy that question.

SUSAN
I thought I just did.

JONATHAN
What I do is commercial and private surveillance.
No industrial espionage or covert stuff.

SUSAN
Lighten up. I was just kidding.

JONATHAN
So was I.

SUSAN
(points to sign on door that read The Looke Agency)
Is that your real name, Jonathan Looke?

JONATHAN
What do you think?

SUSAN
I think it's quite a coincidence that a sp...I mean, a watcher would have a last name like Looke.

JONATHAN
There are a lot of coincidences in life. Ever see how dogs look like their owners.

SUSAN
Does that mean you're not going to answer my question?

JONATHAN
I will, if you answer a question for me.
Is Susan Spellman your real name?

SUSAN
Who would make up a name like that?

JONATHAN
I don't know. Just asking.

SUSAN
Okay. Now answer my question.

JONATHAN
I think I need to get to know you a little better first.

SUSAN
Sounds fair.

Jonathan leans in to kiss her.

Susan rebuffs his advance by moving away.

Jonathan, appearing rejected, changes the subject.

JONATHAN
Uh, let me show you something on the computer.

JONATHAN
Yeah, I guess I'm kind of an introvert. I mean, I like people but I don't necessarily need to be around them all the time. How about you?

SUSAN
Me? Well, I love kids, but adults I'm not so sure about.

JONATHAN
It's all in the face. Someone's face tells you all you need to know. You every play Face?

SUSAN
Face? What's that?

JONATHAN
Pick someone out of the crowd and stare at their face. You can tell a lot about them.
(points to MAN walking by)
That guy. Could've won a Pulitzer Prize, but his parents didn't want him to be a writer. Instead, he went to business school. Now he's rich, but angry all the time.

SUSAN
Are you for real? You can tell all that?

JONATHAN
Sure. Go ahead, you try.

SUSAN
(points to a TEENAGE GIRL who smokes a cigarette)
Rebellious. Feels disconnected from the people in the world around her. Hates authority. Wants to run away but has nowhere to run. Doesn't trust anyone and wishes she had a whole new life.

JONATHAN
That sounded a little too precise. You know that girl?

SUSAN
Like I said, I'm good with kids.

JONATHAN
Why do you like old movies so much?

SUSAN
I used to watch them with my father when I was little. It was an innocent time. Life was simple then. And the movies always had a happy ending. That's what I've always wanted in my life.

JONATHAN
(pause)
I want to kiss you. And I don't want you to move away this time.

SUSAN
I won't move away this time.

JONATHAN
Can I help you with something?

Susan is startled.

SUSAN
Sorry. I'm a little paranoid.

JONATHAN
It doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

SUSAN
What do you mean by that?

JONATHAN
You don't trust me, do you?

SUSAN
I want to.

JONATHAN
Maybe I need to earn your trust.

Jonathan reaches for a book, opens it and takes out a DVD labeled Susan.

He places it in the computer and it plays.

Susan watches footage of herself exiting the art house, entering her apartment building, working at the Children's Hospital.

She is shocked and angered.

SUSAN
You are a spy. You've been spying on me.

JONATHAN
No. No, it's not like that.

SUSAN
You've been watching me. That's how you knew all that stuff about me.

JONATHAN
I've been watching out for you.

SUSAN
Who sent you? Who are you working for?

JONATHAN
(moves toward her) I didn't have to tell you, but I thought...
Susan, you're in some danger and I want to...

SUSAN
You stay away from me!

JONATHAN
All I know is that you're in some kind of trouble but...

SUSAN
I trusted you. I was going to sleep with you. And all the while you were spying on me.

JONATHAN
Susan, don't say that. You don't understand. I may have lost my best friend because of this assignment. I have crossed a professional line for this...for you. I don't even know who you are or what the hell is going on. And now I know you and I want to help you. Please let me.

SUSAN
I can't deal with this right now.
(runs toward the door and exits)

JONATHAN
Susan...

She's gone.

Jonathan slams the door in frustration.
